The 66th edition of La Candelaria Fair held at Parque Juarez

Febrero  2022 –  AtencionSMA

After going through the pandemic and a change of venue over the last two years, the Feria de la Candelaria returned to iconic Parque Juarez in 2022 for its 66th edition.

At the Feria de la Candelaria, which used to be called the festival of flowers, exhibitors from all over Mexico gather to offer a diverse selection of more than 1,000 plant species. This tradition is over 100 years old and originally took place in the churches and streets of San Miguel’s historic center, where locals and foreigners exchanged plants on Candlemas Day. Little by little this custom caught on with residents, turned into the Feria and eventually became an annual event, which in 2022 marks its 66th year.

Today the Feria de la Candelaria continues to bring together exhibitors from all over the country. This year more than 150 plant vendors from a number of states, including Puebla, Veracruz, the State of Mexico and Mexico City, participated.

The 66th Feria de la Candelaria was held from January 28th to February 11th, returning to Parque Juarez after a two-year absence. Mayor Mauricio Trejo Pureco visited the flower merchants to reaffirm his commitment to this tradition and to wish them successful sales.

A number of cultural and artistic events were held during the Feria’s two weeks, including a blessing of the park and the exchange of seeds during the dance of the concheros from Valle del Maiz. The dance of the Concheros is an important traditional dance and ceremony which has been performed in Mexico since early in the colonial period. This cultural phenomenon has syncretic roots (both pre-Hispanic and Christian) and is linked to various religious festivals. The event was coordinated by the municipality’s Department of Culture and Traditions and Department of Environment and Sustainability.
